What to Expect From Your First Music Lesson.
Starting music lessons is an exciting step, whether you’re learning singing, piano, guitar, or another instrument. If it’s your first time working with a professional music teacher, you might be wondering:
• What will my first lesson be like?
• Do I need to prepare anything?
• How do music lessons actually work?
Every music studio is different, but at Emily’s Music Studio, we believe that your first lesson should be inspiring, encouraging, and tailored to your goals. Let’s walk through what you can expect when starting music lessons—whether with us or anywhere else!
1. A Conversation About Your Musical Goals & Experience
Your first lesson will usually start with a short chat with your teacher to help them understand your:
✅ Musical background (if any—beginners are welcome!)
✅ Favorite styles, artists, or pieces you’d love to learn
✅ Your goals—whether that’s learning for fun, preparing for auditions, or improving technique
If you’re brand new to music, that’s totally okay! Your teacher will guide you at your own pace.
2. Warm-Ups & Technique Exercises
🎤 For singers:
You’ll go through breathing exercises, pitch training, and vocal warm-ups to explore your range and help your teacher understand your voice.
🎸🎹 For instrumentalists:
Your teacher will check your posture, hand position, and technique, followed by some basic scales or simple exercisesto see where you are.
This step helps create a personalized approach so your lessons focus on exactly what you need to improve!
3. Playing or Singing a Song Right Away
Even in your first lesson, you’ll get to play or sing a piece of music!
🎶 If you already have a favorite song or piece, your teacher can help you start working on it.
🎶 If you’re not sure where to begin, your teacher will suggest something based on your interests and skill level.
Music is meant to be hands-on and fun, so we want you to start making music from day one!
4. Your Personalized Lesson Plan & Next Steps
At the end of your lesson, you and your teacher will discuss:
✅ What to practice before your next lesson
✅ How often to schedule lessons (weekly, bi-weekly, etc.)
✅ A roadmap for your progress, whether you’re learning casually or training for performances
Every student is different, so your teacher will tailor the lesson plan to fit your goals and learning style.
What You DON’T Need to Worry About:
❌ You don’t need to be perfect—this is a judgment-free space focused on learning and growth.
❌ You don’t need to prepare anything unless you want to!
❌ You don’t need to know music theory—your teacher will guide you step by step.
